These are not snacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coffee beans are there to help a person \u201creset\u201d their olfactory system after they\u2019ve smelled too much bergamot and sandalwood and lily of the valley. After sniffing bottle after bottle of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eau de toilette<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a person can become \u201cnose blind\u201d \u2014\u00a0i.e., incapable of smelling much of anything due to olfactory fatigue. It\u2019s been said that the strong, singular smell of pure coffee provides a kind of \u201creset\u201d for your nose so you can go back to smelling perfumes. It\u2019s not clear this is actually true, but if you\u2019re a department store trying to move six cases of Clinique Happy, you can\u2019t take any chances. This is very tiring. And because it\u2019s so tiring, the brain finds ways to cut corners. For instance, when we encounter certain phrases or word pairings that we\u2019ve seen a million times, we\u2019ve learned to kind of cognitively skim over them because we won\u2019t be missing critical information. \u201cI know that one,\u201d the brain says and moves onto the next phrase, the next word, effectively on autopilot until it gets to something more exciting, like \u201cSchenectady\u201d or \u201crecently escaped convict.\u201d You\u2019re definitely not word blind to that one.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, I\u2019ve been thinking that if you hang out in the quilt world long enough, you\u2019re in danger of becoming word blind to the words \u201cquilt\u201d and \u201cstory\u201d when they\u2019re used in conjunction. And they\u2019re used in conjunction a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get me wrong; phrases like \u201cevery quilt tells a story\u201d or \u201cquilt your story\u201d are beautiful. Quiltfolk\u2019s own stated mission to \u201ctell the stories behind the stitches\u201d is as good as a mission statement gets. Both \u201cquilt\u201d and \u201cstory\u201d are evocative, powerful, deeply meaningful words, but because quilt-and-story phrases appear <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so often<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the quilt discourse, are we becoming word blind to them? If our brains skim over these phrases when we read them\u2014e.g., \u201cYeah, quilts tell stories, got it\u201d\u2014a world of meaning gets skimmed over too. <\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not on my watch! Consider this post a rhetorical dish of coffee beans.<\/span><\/i> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ea7e02d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ea7e02d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a185462\" data-id=\"a185462\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1bc14a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1bc14a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><b>The Incredible Impact of Story<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It happens occasionally that I\u2019ll pop my head up from whatever I\u2019m working on and think, \u201cAm I really still talking about this?\u201d Then I remember that to speak and write about quilts is to speak and write about art and culture, history and politics, and time. Plus, there\u2019s color absolutely everywhere, which is very cool. In my line of work, I get to tell people about other people like them or not like them, the living and the dead, and the meaning we make with our hands. It\u2019s a good gig because basically, I get to tell stories.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ah, stories. We crave them as children. We relish them as adults, as evidenced by bookstores and movie theaters\u2014both of which exist for the sole purpose of telling stories. Technically speaking, a story is a narrative that conveys a series of events connected in some way. They can be true or fictional, spoken or written, and you know a good one when you hear\/read it. But that\u2019s a sterile definition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories are much more than that: Stories teach us how to be people. We tell and listen to others tell stories of love, terror, heartache, adventure, loss, and triumph then carry them with us all our lives because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are the stories we remember.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stories give our lives shape and meaning. For quilt people\u2014whether you make, study, or have history with any aspect of quilts\u2014it\u2019s deeply rewarding when you get the opportunity to tell it.<\/span><b> There\u2019s something even better than that, though: When a quilter writes their story down, it means other people, now and in the future, can be rewarded too\u2014because reading someone else\u2019s story gives permission for others to share their own!<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\"
