McDowell, a pictorial fiber artist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This prompted me to think about what would happen to all my quilting treasures when I am gone. Unfortunately, we can&#8217;t take them with us. And while we don&#8217;t like to think about it, we do want our precious creations and \u201cstuff\u201d to go to people who will appreciate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To explore this, I utilized a Facebook forum of more than 36,000 quilters to ask questions on this topic. The survey response was tremendous. Many had good ideas and even more said they couldn\u2019t wait for the article to be published to help them prepare. There were a couple of popular answers among quilters with a plan. Often, the first call would be to quilting buddies, a guild, or family to get first dibs. (You\u2019ll know who will appreciate your stuff more.) And daughters, especially quilting daughters, trumped sons. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My two daughters would split everything between them. Thank goodness they are addicted to quilting, too,\u201d said Colleen, another survey respondent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My favorite response was from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jolyn, who said, \u201cMy family knows to call my quilting friends, buy wine and snacks, and let them take whatever they want. Family and friends can take what they want. Whatever is left goes to charity.\u201d What if this causes a fight that leads to a brawl at the funeral? Valerie Baker of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poundandinch.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pound and Inch Fabric and Sewing Store<\/a> in Moline, Illinois, buys quilting cotton by the pound and sells it by the inch. \u201cWe often hear from families after a loved one passes,\u201d Valerie said. <a href=\"https:\/\/feelgoodfibers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FeelGood Fibers <\/a>is an online marketplace for quilters to de-stash and buy second-hand fabric.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5d3c6b1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default If you want to sell your quilts, be sure to annotate any awards or publications in which they were featured. Consider sending award ribbons with the quilts. This all adds to their value. Also, provide as much detail as you can for any vintage (including what you paid) or family-made quilts. Indicate which ones you want to specifically stay with family and why. Donating your quilts is another great option. The names stay as I reuse the box, but when I\u2019m gone, they\u2019ll think that project was intended for them. So if you are considering selling your machine through a Buy\/Sell\/Trade site, do some research to identify sources in your area that will buy used machines. To find a new home, Judy suggested, \u201cCall your local guild, consider a women\u2019s prison, VA organization, or disaster relief As for this writer, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I personally have expressed my wishes, and my husband has even asked good questions about information he\u2019d need. However, amid grief, I don\u2019t think he will remember. Along with my spring and fall house cleaning, I\u2019m now also going through my studio, culling fabrics that no longer thrill me, projects I don\u2019t intend to finish, tools that I have multiples of, and finding new homes for them.
