As our Alaska edition arrives on our reader\u2019s doorsteps, our hearts break for all those in the area who are currently dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Halong. We send our love and thoughts to all residents in the region.<\/span><\/p>

On October 11, the remnants of Typhoon Halong struck Alaska\u2019s southwest coast with hurricane-force winds, unleashing record-breaking flooding across numerous Alaska Native villages. Evacuees and rescue workers report scenes of widespread devastation: utility poles snapped in half, boardwalks\u2014the lifelines of many tundra communities\u2014torn from the ground, and homes ripped from their foundations, some carrying families still inside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

State officials estimate that more than a thousand residents have been displaced, with many unable to return to their homes. The storm has claimed one life, left two people missing, and destroyed or severely damaged dozens of houses, particularly in the hardest-hit villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

Alaska Native Heritage Center<\/strong> is seeking donations of traditional Alaska Native foods, as well as bulk frozen food donations, to use for community gatherings and will distribute food to families who are hosting displaced individuals. All donations should be frozen and harvested within the past year. Call 907-205-0068. Or\u00a0<\/span>sign up to donate<\/a>. Email\u00a0<\/span>nativefoods@alaskanative.net<\/a>\u00a0to receive food.<\/span><\/p>

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium<\/strong> is accepting all traditional food in good condition to feed evacuees staying in shelters in Anchorage. Drop off donations Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ANTHC Lodging, located at 4001 Tudor Centre Drive, or, to arrange for an off-hours donation, email NativeFood4Life@anthc.org.<\/span><\/p>

Donate perishable and nonperishable foods to the Alaska Food Bank<\/strong> at 2192 Viking Dr., open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a drop box to donate non-perishable foods outside of business hours. The food bank only accepts subsistence foods that have been commercially processed.<\/span><\/p>

Team Rubicon<\/strong> is accepting new items at the old Chugach Electric warehouse at 1120 E 1st Ave, seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find an updated list of needed items on their\u00a0<\/span>Facebook page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Anchorage Animal Care and Control<\/strong> needs dog food, gallon jugs of water, blankets and towels for pets evacuated from Western Alaska. Drop off donations in the parking lot at 4711 Elmore Rd, or purchase items from their\u00a0<\/span>Amazon Wishlist.<\/a><\/p>

Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach<\/strong> is collecting dog food for evacuated dogs at Southside Animal Hospital at 12000 Industry Way.<\/span><\/p>

Alaska Bead Company<\/strong> is doing a bead and craft supply drive, with goods to go to evacuees in Anchorage and people in Western Alaska. Drop supplies off at the store, at 2217 East Tudor Rd., during business hours through Nov. 1.<\/span><\/p>

On October 11, the remnants of Typhoon Halong struck Alaska\u2019s southwest coast with hurricane-force winds, unleashing record-breaking flooding across numerous Alaska Native villages. Evacuees and rescue workers report scenes of widespread devastation: utility poles snapped in half, boardwalks\u2014the lifelines of many tundra communities\u2014torn from the ground, and homes ripped from their foundations, some carrying families still inside. State officials estimate that more than a thousand residents have been displaced, with many unable to return to their homes.
